About 85mya (million years ago) the continental fragment Zealandia split from Gondwana. Much of Zealandia was submerged, that which wasn't became New Zealand. By 70mya New Zealand was completely isolated by the newly created Tasman Sea. Then about 25mya forces created by the movements of the Pacific and Australian plates took over, forming new land and stretching New Zealand. Finally 5mya volcanic activity and mountain building increased, creating the New Zealand of today.
